How can I know if it is safe to scan a QR code? How can I avoid fraud and stay protected?

With the QR Code scams going around, it is certainly difficult to distinguish a genuine one from a fake one. But if you take the right steps, you should be safe -

  1. Before clicking on the link prompted, ensure the source is a known website and not a random one. Look out for any spelling mistakes and short URLs which are red flags for clicking further.
  2. Generally tampering with QR Codes by sticking new ones over original ones is the way to run QR Code scams. Look out for any such signals before you scan.
  3. Avoid downloading anything after scanning.
