What motivates users to scan a QR code? How can we improve QR Code scan rate?

I come across 4-5 QR Codes daily—on brochures, billboards, and more. While the relevance of the offer or ad matters, what other factors influence someone’s decision to scan a QR Code?

Just like we optimize for better button click rates on our websites, what strategies can help improve QR Code scan rates?

At the top of my mind, two things make me ignore a QR Code.

The first is the design of the QR Codes. While I can’t speak for all, I do believe having a clean structure to the QR Codes can increase their scan rate.

For example, which one of the two QR codes below are you more likely to scan?

The 2nd thing is clear information on what to expect after scanning the QR Code. I’ve seen billboards and brochure designs where brands just put a QR Code without mentioning where the QR Code leads. I’ll mostly ignore those.

Clearly mentioned what your QR Code does. Either by adding a CTA frame to your QR or just adding adding text above or below the code .
